Sioma Ngwezi National Park

This 5,000 square kilometre park in the south western corner of the country has been completely undeveloped and rarely visited until recently and is surrounded by an unfenced 35,000 square kilometre Game Management Area. The Park and surrounding GMA form an important link in the migratory route of elephants from the bordering national parks of Botswana and Namibia.

Although there is little in the way of tourist development at the time of writing, there are ambitious plans to incorporate Shiwa Ngwezi into a Transfrontier National Park, which would link together conservation areas in neighbouring countries. Although this development maybe some time away, there is already talk of private management and possible development.

The park is home to over 3,000 elephants, and several endangered species including roan, sable, wild dog and cheetah. Also found are lion, leopard, puku, impala, roan, sable, zebra and kudu. The nearby spectacular Ngonye Falls are second only to the mighty Victoria Falls on the Zambezi.
