Kafue is Zambia’s oldest Park and by far the largest, covering over 22,000 square kilometres – roughly the size of Wales. From the tree studded open wilderness and wetland areas of the south to the seasonal flood plain delta system of the Busanga Plains in the north west, this fascinating Park supports an astounding diversity of habitat and wildlife.

The open areas are home to huge herds of plains game, which in turn attract the attentions of lion, cheetah and leopard. Interesting species include Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, Defassa waterbuck, puku, oribi, sable and roan antelope with wild dog, caracal, pangolin, aardvark and blue duiker occasionally spotted. Over 490 species of bird have been recorded.
Whilst the Park is accessible by road from Lusaka, the remoter areas of the north and the Busanga Plains are best reached by light aircraft. Traditional open vehicle game drives and walking are the main activities, with superb canoe safaris operating seasonally on the Lunga River.
