Bangweulu Wetlands
The vast Bangweulu Wetlands lie 50kms to the north of Kasanka and are divided into three main habitats – open water to the north west, huge swamps in the middle and in the south and east, seasonally flooded grass plains. It is the latter habitat and the swampy Lukulu River that support an incredible diversity of water birds and mammals.

Massive herds of the black lechwe, elephant, buffalo, tsessebe, reedbuck, oribi and sitatunga are all adapted to the wetland environment and this is paradise for the keen birder. Bangweulu is probably the best place remaining in the world to see the rare and elusive shoebill stork in the wild at the right time of year, along with a profusion of waterfowl.
