One of the most breath-taking landscapes in South Africa is that of the mountain ranges of the Drakensbergs in Kwazulu Natal. The area is home to several national parks and reserves, the main one being Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park, which runs for hundreds of miles down the eastern border of Lesotho. The most impressive of the spectacular mountains and rock formations are Cathedral Peak, Champagne Castle, Giants Castle and Drakensberg Garden.

Hundreds of visitors are attracted to the area every year as it offers something for everyone, from gentle strolls to strenuous mountain hiking, climbing, mountain biking and wonderful bird watching. The prime time to visit is during the rainy season from October to April where the flowers are in full bloom and the meadows are green and lush.
The name Drakensberg was coined in 1887 when a Boer father and son reported seeing a dragon - a giant lizard with wings and a tail - flying high above the cloud-shrouded mountain peaks.
