Damaraland
Damaraland is an arid region in the north-west, characterised by rolling plains and distant mountains. The area is inhabited and named after the Damaras. The Damarland community is committed to preserving the wildlife of the area and has formed a community wildlife conservancy in order to protect it. The Torra conservancy is one of the most successful in Africa and has become the first to sustain itself without donor funding.

The area is geologically fascinating. The Brandberg Nature reserve contains some very significant ancient San rock paintings and it is also home to the rare desert elephant, black rhino and several endemic bird species.
Walking in the area is highly recommended, as is a visit to the Twyfelfontein rock art.
