Liwonde National Park

Liwonde National Park covers a total area of 548 Sq. and is situated on the eastern bank of the Shire River, and bordering on Lake Malombe in the North, the park is 64Km from Zomba and about 100Km from the southern end of Lake Malawi. It is one of Malawi’s best wildlife parks. The vegetation is diverse ranging from the swamps, lagoons and reed-beds along the river edge, grassland in the better drained areas where palm, sausage and baobab trees grow, whilst elsewhere there is Mopane woodland, and some dense woodland.

Liwonde National Parks attractions include hippos and crocodiles from the Shire River, plenty of elephants (it boasts one of Malawi’s largest populations), impala, water bucks, bushbucks, kudu, lions, leopards, baboons, and warthog. Birds are abundant, as well as more common species like jacana and fish eagles you may spot the rarer Lilian’s Lovebird. Game viewing and bird watching tours can be taken by vehicle or boat.

Liwonde National park is easily accessible by road. The main gate is a few kilometers from Liwonde town. Accommodation includes the luxury Mvuu Wilderness Lodge, with four large fully en suite double tents with their own balconies overlooking a water hole where game and birds are active.

The best time to visit the park is during the dry season, which is in August to October.
