The Parc National des Volcans is a region of now extinct volcanoes known as the 'Virungas' rising in excess of 15,000 feet and covered with rich rain forests, making it ideal gorilla and monkey country. Home to many of the world's remaining mountain gorillas, with silverback males dominating the nests.
This area is famous for being the last sanctuary for the mountain gorillas to which Dian Fossey dedicated her life and as well as trips to the region she worked in, there are also numerous volcanic craters to climb.

As well as gorillas and monkeys the rich vegetation attracts herds of buffalo and elephants as well as a plethora of birdlife.
Most visitors come for the experience of gorilla trekking. These walking safaris can last for up to several hours and are strictly controlled - you must have a permit for each safari (usually arranged in advance by your tour operator) and once gorillas are sighted viewing is strictly limited to an hour.
